Eagles and Lumberjacks meet for the first time tonight

EUGENE, Ore. (NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University men’s basketball program looks to get back on track following its 58-45 loss to the University of Oregon last night.  Day two of the 2011 Global Sports Hoops Showcase gives the maroon and gray a chance at redemption as the Eagles battle Stephen F. Austin tonight at 7:30 p.m. (EST) at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon.

This will be NCCU’s first-ever meeting against a team from the Southland Conference since moving to the NCAA Division I level.  SFA (5-5) is coming off a disappointing 53-50 loss to Prairie View A&M in the first game of the evening on Tuesday evening, where the Lumberjacks went 0-for-8 from three-point range and were a paltry 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) from the free-throw line in the loss.

The key player for the ‘Jacks is 6-7, 230-pound center Jereal Scott who led all scorers last night with 18 points and nine rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.  Scott averages 15.0 points per contest along with 6.1 rebounds per tilt.

NCCU (5-6) is looking to recover from its worst shooting performance of the year in the loss to the host Ducks where the Eagles shot 29.5 percent from the field including 4-for-20 (20.0 percent) beyond the arc.

Junior Ray Willis (Atlanta, Ga.) led the Eagles with 11 points but went 5-for-21 from the field.  Sophomore Jeremy Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.) sparked the maroon and gray with 10 points off the bench in the loss.

Fans can tune in to tonight’s matchup beginning at 7:15 (EST) with Eagle Gameday built by Dayeco Construction Co. as play-by-play voice of the NCCU Sports Network, Chris Hooks, will call all live action of the 2011 Global Sports Hoops Showcase courtside at “The Matt”.  Keep track of the game on twitter as well by following both @NCCUAthletics and @NCCUradio and by using the hashtag #NCCUGLOBAL.

NCCU will end the showcase with a 7:30 p.m. showdown with Prairie A&M University on Wednesday, Dec. 22 in the final contest before the holiday break.
