Eagles Rally to Take First Set, Panthers Respond by Winning the Next Three

HIGH POINT, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior Shantel Moore amassed a team-high 12 kills and the Eagles rallied from behind to take the first set, but host High Point University answered the challenge by sweeping the next three sets to win Tuesday’s volleyball match, 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-18).

The visiting Eagles trailed 23-19 in the opening set, but went on a streak to capture the next six points and win the set, 25-23. NCCU senior Emanuelle Santos had five kills and two service aces in the set victory, while Moore chipped in four kills. As a team, the Eagles posted a hitting percentage of .258.

In the second set, a kill by Moore gave NCCU an 11-10 lead before the Panthers pulled away for a 25-18 win.

In the third set, the score was tied at 9-9 when High Point used six service aces to help outscore the Eagles 16-5 the rest of the way.

In the fourth and final set of the evening, NCCU trailed by just one point at 14-13, but once again the Panthers pulled away for the 25-18 victory.

In addition to her 12 kills, Moore added five digs and two blocks to lead NCCU (3-25). Santos finished the match with nine kills, a team-high 11 digs and three service aces, while sophomore Kalin Russell contributed six kills and five blocks. Rookie setter Alice Genna distributed 26 assists.

High Point (7-20) was paced by Kristin Heldt with 14 kills and two blocks.

NCCU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 11 at South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C., starting at 7 p.m.
