SAVANNAH, Ga. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – In the final regular-season match of the season, senior Emanuelle Santos led the North Carolina Central University volleyball team to a three-set (25-9, 25-5, 25-17) victory over the Tigers of Savannah State on Sunday, Nov. 13 in Savannah, Ga.
Santos has been formidable assets for the Eagles this year, and Sunday’s contest was no exception. The Rio de Janeiro native paced the offensive and defensive with her eighth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs. Fellow senior Shantel Moore assisted in the offensive effort with 11 kills, while freshman standout Dayanna Arrufat rounded out the offense with nine kills. Freshman Alice Genna delivered 33 assists in the win.
Collectively, NCCU hit 38 percent seizing 42 kills on 86 attempts with only nine errors, while accumulating seven service aces, 39 digs and six team blocks.
The Eagles put a halt to the Tigers offense, with SSU hitting a negative nine percent on the night. Chikia Jones paced the Georgia host with five kills in the loss, while Bryana Gadis collected five digs. Setters Asiha Williams and Ashlee Butler circulated five assists each.
Savannah State collected 14 kills on 80 attempts with 21 errors, as they gathered 32 digs and two team blocks.
The mighty maroon took the first two sets with authority, only permitting a combined 14 points over the two sets.
SSU gave their best effort during set three of play, hitting 11 percent and tying the match on four occasions. Despite their attempts, by the final tie of 8-8, NCCU paced to 7-1 run for a score of 15-9 and forced SSU to take a timeout.
While the Tigers offensive picked up, the Eagles retained their supremacy and seized a 25-17 set three win.
Sunday’s contest concludes the regular season with NCCU finishing at 5-25 overall and 5-5 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
For the first time since the 2006 campaign, the Eagles will participate in conference tournament play. On Friday, Nov. 18, NCCU will head to Baltimore, Md., for the MEAC Tournament, the three-day competition will feature the top four MEAC squads from the Northern and Southern Division.
