NCCU VOLLEYBALL CLUTCHES A FIVE-SET VICTORY OVER SOUTH CAROLINA STATE

Genna Seizes the First Double-Double of Her Career

ORANGEBURG, S.C. –
The North Carolina Central University volleyball broke its four-match losing streak with a five set (13-25, 10-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-4) win over South Carolina State University on Friday, Nov. 11 in Orangeburg, S.C.

NCCU freshman Alice Genna achieved the first double-double of her career with 28 assists and 13 digs, while senior Emanuelle Santos topped the squad in kills with 10.  Senior Raven King followed Genna’s effort with 12 digs, while sophomore Kalin Russell assisted on five blocks.

In the five-set victory, NCCU turned 109 attempts into 38 kills on 20 errors, served seven service aces, dug 49 Bulldog attempts and collected twelve team blocks.

South Carolina State took the first two sets of play with confidence, with NCCU scoring a combined 23 points over the course of the two sets.

Following the 10-minute intermission, the mighty maroon was determined go out with a fight.  The Eagles clutched convincing set three and four wins to even the match. 

NCCU and SCSU tied on three occasions early in set three, but a quick 4-0 Eagles run forced the Bulldogs to take a timeout at the 8-4 mark.

As the two squads returned to the court, the maroon and gray paced to an even larger run to take a 10-point lead with a score of 17-7 off of six SCSU errors before the host squad took its second timeout of the set. 

NCCU outscored SCSU 8-6 to take a 25-13 set three win.

Set four of the match, took more of an effort from NCCU.  While the Eagles held the lead from 9-9 mark on, SCSU remained tight on their heels.  Between two maroon and gray timeouts, NCCU only outscored the South Carolina host 13-10 for a score of 22-19, until the efforts of senior Shantel Moore and Russell sealed the set at 25-21.

The Eagles sealed the night with a fifth-set 15-4 win.  SCSU handed NCCU the win by committing 10 hitting errors and only collecting two kills, while NCCU amassed four kills on one error.

South Carolina State’s Desiree Waller gathered 20 kills, as Elizabeth Webb followed with 11 kills.  Setter Bria Brimmer delivered 44 assists, while Melissa Robinson collected 18 digs.  Assisting in the defensive effort was Shabree Roberson who assisted on two blocks.

South Carolina State gathered 50 kills on 34 errors, while amassing 47 assists, 47 digs and three team blocks.
The mighty maroon concludes the 2011 regular season with a Sunday, Nov. 13 matchup against Savannah State in Savannah, Ga., at 3:00 p.m.
