Eagles Looks to Remain Undefeated in MEAC Play

www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team looks to remain undefeated in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3:00 p.m., as they take on the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Eagles (1-18) return to action following a three-set (25-14, 25-23, 25-22) loss to the Spartans of UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in Greensboro, N.C.  Senior Emanuelle Santos achieved her third double-double of season, seizing 10 kills and 13 digs in the loss.

This season, the maroon and grey is led by freshman Dayanna Arrufat and sophomores Jzima-Malaki Kalao and Kalin Russell.  Arrufat paces NCCU in kills with 154 kills on the season for an average of 2.52 kills per set, while leading in digs with 111.  Kalao leads the Eagles in assists (284) and service aces (13), while Russell guides the blocking campaign with 33 total blocks this year.

Collectively, the mighty maroon have amassed 571 kills, 520 assists, 76 service aces, 601 digs and 80 total blocks.

The Wildcats are led by offensive duo Krysta Gardner and Janeen Davis.  Gardner paces in kills with 262, while Davis follows closely at 247 on the year.  Frances Rodriguez guides this setting campaign with 426 assists for an average 6.87 assists per set.  Gardner leads the squad in service aces with 24.  Defensively, the Wildcats are led by Jennifer Jimenez and Linda Nwabuko.  Jimenez has collected 213 digs, while Nwabuko has blocked 32 opponent’s attempts.

As a unit, Bethune-Cookman has collected 729 kills, 677 assists, 93 service aces, 800 digs and 67.5 total blocks.

Saturday’s matchup marks the match number two of the Eagles three-match road trip.  Following the Eagles versus the Wildcats contest, NCCU will remain in the Sunshine State to face Florida A&M on Monday, Oct. at 7:00 p.m.
