Santos Obtains Her Third Double-Double of the Season

(www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Senior Emanuelle Santos continues to the lead the North Carolina Central University volleyball team with her third double-double outing of the season in a three-set (25-14, 25-23, 25-22) loss to the Spartans of UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in Fleming Gymnasium.

Santos concluded the night leading in kills and digs, with 10 kills and 13 digs. 

Fellow senior Tasha-Gaye Richards and freshman Dayanna Arrufat collected six kills apiece.  Freshman Alice Genna and sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao shared in the setting campaign, Genna circulated 13 assists, while Kalao distributed 12 assists.  Arrufat and Genna served one service ace each, as Richards and Arrufat assisted on block apiece.

The mighty maroon amassed 30 kills, 40 digs and one team block.

The Spartans offense was led by Karrian Chambers, who topped the win with 12 kills.  UNCG also utilized two setters in the win, with Ari Lysacek and Emily McMurtrey fueling the offense.  Lysacek finished with 18 assists, while McMurtrey distributed 13 assists. 

Defensively, Kellie Orewiler dug 11 Eagle attempts, while Vicky Harley and Chambers assisted on three blocks each.

The host squad gathered 48 kills, nine service aces, 36 digs and seven team blocks.

Set one of the match began with NCCU and UNCG tied at five points apiece.  Until the Spartans went on 5-1 run by way of three consecutive kills and two maroon and gray errors, forcing the Eagles to take a timeout and regroup.
After the timeout, the Spartans went on another run to increase the lead to an 11-point margin with a score of 17-8.  The mighty maroon took their last timeout of the set.

The maroon and gray returned to the court seizing six points, the largest run since the beginning of the match.  But with UNCG holding an 11-point margin over NCCU, the run was not enough to overpower the Spartans.  UNCG took set one with a score of 25-14.

The Eagles put forth a stronger effort during set two, UNCG only achieved four-point margin lead throughout the set.  The second set consisted of 10 ties and six lead changes before an attack error by Santos and kill by UNCG’s Kelsey Sidney sealed the set with a score of 25-23.

Following a 10-minute intermission, NCCU returned to match for set three.  Still fueling of the fire from set two, the Eagles took the lead with a score of 6-5. 

But the host team would not surrender, UNCG kicked up their offense to take a 12-8 lead.

After a NCCU timeout, the Eagles and the Spartans went point-for-point.  Despite their effort, UNCG increased their margin lead, with a score of 17-12.

Following another round of timeouts by both NCCU and UNCG, the Eagles went on an 8-6 run for a score of 23-21 with the Spartans still ahead.

UNCG took their last timeout of the night, before seizing two points to clinch a 25-22 set win and conclude the match.

The Eagles drop to 1-18 on the season, while the Spartans advance to 10-10 on the season.

The maroon and gray continue the season with a trip to the Sunshine State to face Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes Bethune-Cookman (Oct. 9) and Florida A&M (Oct. 10)
