LADY EAGLES BASKETBALL SET FOR SECOND BATTLE IN BALTIMORE ON MONDAY

NCCU visits the Morgan State Lady Bears

Game Notes: North Carolina Central at Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. –
The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University will remain in Baltimore, Md., for a Monday night matchup against Morgan State University on Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Talmadge Hill Field House.
 
In this sixth series meeting at Morgan State, the Lady Eagles hope to bounce back from a 59-47 loss to Coppin State on Saturday, Jan. 15. 
 
The Lady Eagles and Lady Bears met last season in Baltimore, Md., with Morgan State taking a 75-38 victory. Two former NCCU student-athletes paced the offense in the loss: Brittany Myatt and Latoya Bennett. Myatt and Bennett netted 10 points apiece. The pair also grabbed seven rebounds each to lead the rebounding game. NCCU senior Shanise Blanks and junior Blaire Houston stole three Morgan State possessions apiece.
 
The Lady Bears had three student-athletes score in double-figures in last year’s win. Georgien Williams earned her first double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds, Corin Adams netted 14 points, while Erin Hawkins collected 12 points and perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
 
NCCU enters the contest after a 59-47 loss to Coppin State. Seniors Jori Nwachukwu and Blanks scored in double-figures on the Saturday afternoon contest, along with a season-high six points from Sheresa Mills. Nwachukwu obtained her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Blanks netted 15 points, with all her points come from behind the three-point arc.
 
Morgan State hosts the Lady Eagles following a 61-54 win over South Carolina State University on Saturday, Jan. 15. The Lady Bears’ victory marked South Carolina State’s first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss this season. 
 
Brittany Noel and Jamesia Smith scored in double-figures for the Lady Bears winning offense. Noel netted 14 points, while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Smith amassed 11 points, while commanding the offense with five assists. Theresa Davis seized eight rebounds in the win.
 
With a sixth double-double under her belt, Nwachukwu leads the NCCU offense with 13.3 points per game. Chasidy Williams is the second-leading scorer at 12.3 points per contest, as Blanks rounds out the top three leading scorers with 7.1 points per game. Nwachukwu also paces the Lady Eagles’ rebounds and blocks, with 8.8 boards per game and 21 total blocks. Williams has used her speed to steal 28 opponents’ possessions, while Blanks distributes the basketball for 24 assists this season.
 
As a unit, the maroon and grey average 49 points per contest, and score 31 percent from the field, 20 percent from the long range and 63 percent from the free-throw line.
 
Brittany Dodson, Hawkins and Davis lead the Morgan State offense. Dodson paces the offensive campaign with 12.3 points per game, Hawkins is the second-leading scorer with 9.1 points per contest and Davis is the third-leading scorer with 8.2 points per game. Dodson also assists in the offensive effort with 43 assists this season. Davis grabs 7.1 rebounds per game, while Moneshia Davis has stolen 31 possessions.
 
Collectively, the Lady Bears average 55 points per contest, and hit 35 percent from the field, 30 percent from the behind the three-point arc and 74 percent from the charity stripe.
