NCCU STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: CAMERON CHATMAN

Chatman Leads Eagles with Seven Consecutive Singles Play Wins

April 21, 2010

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central University women's tennis sophomore Cameron Chatman has been named as the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for March 2010, sponsored by The Banks Law Firm.

The High Point, N.C. native became an Eagle after a quick stint at Johnson C. Smith University. Since her arrival at NCCU, Chatman has been a major force for the women's tennis team. During singles competition, Chatman went undefeated for seven consecutive matches from Feb. 8 against Coker to March 23 against Morgan State.

Chatman's singles performance contributed to the Eagles ability to end the season undefeated against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference competition (Hampton, Morgan State, Norfolk State, Winston-Salem State, North Carolina A&T).

"Chatman is truly a coach's kind of student-athlete," said NCCU head women's tennis coach David Nass. "She is successful both in the classroom and on the tennis court. Every time she goes into a match, you can just see her focus and determination. Chatman has beaten many opponents this year and has received praise from coaches of several other universities for her court `smarts' and guts. Her singles play is a perfect mix of patience and attack."

Chatman is a criminal justice major, and maintains a grade point average above 3.0.

She is the daughter of Junius and Karris Chatman, her brother Trey is a member of the NCCU men's tennis team. Chatman graduated from Southwest Guilford High School in High Point, N.C. In her spare time she enjoys playing video games, with Rock Band being her favorite.
