DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University interim head football coach Darryl Bullock has made a few changes with the Eagles’ coaching staff.
Kwame Dixon, who has coached wide receivers at NCCU for three seasons, will now coach both wide receivers and quarterbacks. Gilbert Wiggins, who is now in the fourth season of his second stint at NCCU, will add the role of defensive coordinator to his responsibilities as outside linebackers coach. Jake Cabell, the program’s defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the past three seasons, will continue to serve as defensive backs coach for the Eagles. Bullock, who was elevated to interim head coach on Monday (Oct. 18), will continue to coach the offensive line and take on the offensive play calling duties.
“This is a time for change,” said Bullock. “I think our student-athletes need a new start… something to rally around.
“Coach Wiggins has a lot of experience as a defensive coordinator and has had some No. 1 defenses in the past, including at NCCU,” Bullock said.
Wiggins was the defensive coordinator at NCCU during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. His 2001 defensive unit achieved the No. 1 total defense in NCAA Division II, holding opponents to 187.2 yards per game. Wiggins also served as defensive coordinator at Livingstone College, where he earned the 1997 NCAA Defensive Coordinator of the Year Award by the American Football Quarterly.
NCCU hosts unbeaten and nationally-ranked Bethune-Cookman University on Saturday at 2 p.m. inside O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. The Wildcats boast a 6-0 record and are ranked 14th in this week’s Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll.
