Maurice Williams

Maurice D. Williams is a servant leader who believes in leading from behind, empowering others to succeed, while remaining focused on the collective mission. He is deeply committed to advocating for student-athletes and ensuring they have a meaningful, memorable, and transformative collegiate experience.
 
Williams was named Deputy Athletic Director for External Affairs at North Carolina Central University, where he serves as a member of the department’s executive leadership team and provides strategic oversight for several key operational and external units.
 
In his role, Williams oversees external operations, including strategic communications, brand management, ticket operations, and game day administration for all home athletic contests. He works closely with the ticket office to manage and enhance all ticketing initiatives and collaborates with Peak Sports to support corporate sponsorship activation, fulfillment, and revenue generation efforts.
 
Williams also plays a critical role in departmental operations and institutional coordination. He serves as the primary liaison to multiple campus and external partners, including Legal Affairs, Campus Police, the Chancellor’s Office, and Campus Enterprises, where he assists with budget-related processes, operational planning, and departmental needs.
 
In addition, Williams manages athletics game contract operations in coordination with Legal Affairs, leading efforts to standardize contract language and processes while developing a centralized database to improve organization, accessibility, and institutional compliance across all sport programs.
 
He also oversees staff travel coordination, leads search committees for key departmental hires, and serves as sport administrator for women’s basketball, softball, and track and field. Williams routinely provides leadership support and operational continuity for the department, serving as a key decision-maker when the Director of Athletics is unavailable.
 
Prior to his current role, Williams served as Deputy Athletic Director for Strategic Communications at NCCU, where he led the department’s communications strategy and served as the primary football contact.
 
Before arriving at NCCU, Williams held leadership roles at multiple Division I institutions and conferences, including the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), the University of Tennessee, and Clemson University. He also spent a decade as Director of Sports Information at Hampton University, where he managed all communications operations and media relations for multiple sports programs.
 
A veteran of more than 20 years in collegiate athletics, Williams has built a reputation for leadership in communications, operations, and organizational strategy. He is a member of College Sports Communicators (CSC) and has earned national recognition for his contributions to the profession, including the organization’s Rising Star Award and President’s Award.
 
Williams holds a bachelor’s degree from Livingstone College and two master’s degrees from Hampton University and Old Dominion University. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership at Clemson University.
