With eight years of Division I coaching experience and a national championship as a player at the University of North Carolina to his credit, Ed Geth was hired as an assistant coach for the NCCU women’s basketball program by new head coach Vanessa Taylor in the summer of 2012.
Geth joins NCCU after spending the 2011-12 campaign as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Marshall University, specializing in the development of post players. During his time with the Thundering Herd, Geth coached Erica Woods to a No. 14 ranking in the Conference USA for rebounds and Leandra King to the No. 6 spot in the league for blocks.
Prior to Marshall, Geth spent seven seasons as an assistant women's basketball coach at Wofford College. While coaching for the Terriers, the team led the nation in steals during the 2005-06 season and he coached the institution's all-time leading shot blocker, Jenny Weurding (281 career blocks). Her accomplishment also set the record as the most blocked shots all-time in the Southern Conference. Geth also coached Mahaganey Williams to become the Southern Conference Rookie of the Year as she was only the second person to ever score 1,000 points and grab more than 900 rebounds in school history.
Geth also served as assistant coach with the Maryland Nighthawks of the American Basketball Association under head coach James "Twiggy" Sanders. Previous to the Nighthawks, he was the director of an after-school program in Durham, N.C. Geth has also coached boys' and girls' basketball at Southern Durham High School from 2000-04, serving as girls’ associate head coach and boys’ assistant coach. During his time at Southern, he coached countless Division I and NBA athletes and helped guide the girls’ team to the state championship title game in 2004. Geth also spent the 1999-2000 campaign as a girls’ basketball assistant coach at Hillside High School in Durham, N.C.
His national championship ring came while playing for the University of North Carolina in 1993, beating the University of Michigan in the NCAA title game. While playing with the Tar Heels from 1992-96, Geth was a four-year letterwinner and a participant of the 1995 Final Four team.
Geth gained a solid coaching foundation through his playing days for coaches Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge. He also acquired additional knowledge while playing with future NBA teammates including, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse, Antwawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Jeff McInnis, Shammond Williams, Makhtar Ndiaye, George Lynch and Eric Montross. In his collegiate career, he played in 62 games from and hit 52.5 percent of his field goal attempts.
After completing his North Carolina career, he played professionally overseas in Sweden, Saudi Arabia and Singapore, as well as with the United States Basketball League's Raleigh Cougars in 1997-98. Each of the teams he had been associated with reached their respective championship games. The Ittihad Basketball Club of Saudi Arabia and the Sin Kee Basketball Club of Singapore won their respective titles.
A native of Norfolk, Va., he graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in speech communications. While at Granby High School, Geth was an honor-roll student and All-American player. He played in the 1992 McDonald’s Capital Classic All-Star Game and was a member of an AAU team with future NBA stars Allen Iverson and Joe Smith. He brought in seven varsity letters at Granby in basketball and track & field.
Geth has been married to his wife, Lisa, since August 2000 and the couple has a 14-year-old daughter, Mya, and a 7-year-old son, Ed Jr.
