Maurice Williams

Maurice Williams joined the North Carolina Central University Department of Athletics in June 2024, and he serves as the Deputy Athletic Director for Strategic Communications.
 
While overseeing the day-to-day operations of the strategic communications office, Williams will also serve as the primary media contact for the football team.
 
Most recently, Williams served as Associate Athletic Director for Sports Media in a remote consultant role with Jackson State University. In that role, Williams worked with the baseball program, while also serving as media contact for the football and men’s basketball teams.
 
He was also an assistant in the athletic communications office at Clemson University, where he also pursued a doctoral degree. In addition, Williams was a graduate assistant in the College of Education, working as a teacher’s assistant with the human resources development master’s program.
 
Previously, Williams served as Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) from 2019-21. He was the conference’s primary media contact for football, men’s basketball, softball, and men’s golf.
 
Williams joined the MEAC office after two years as Assistant Director for Media Relations at the University of Tennessee, where he was the primary softball contact and a secondary contact for football.
 
Prior to Tennessee, Williams spent 10 years as Director of Sports Information at Hampton University—where he was the primary media contact for football, men’s basketball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf.
 
In addition, Williams was the sport administrator for men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, and softball. He was also an adjunct and assistant professor in the Health, Recreation, and Physical Education department.
 
Before coming to Hampton, Williams was the Director of Sports Information at Shaw University.
 
Williams was featured in the February 2011 issue of CoSIDA Digest, and he was the 2012 recipient of the CoSIDA Rising Star Award and the 2016 honoree for the CoSIDA President’s Award.
 
Williams holds memberships in College Sports Communicators (CSC, formerly CoSIDA) and Black College Sports Information Directors of America (BCSIDA). With CSC, Williams has served on the Committee-on-Committees Committee, the Scholarships Committee, the Academic All-Americans Committee, and he was the vice chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
 
A graduate of Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., Williams got his start in athletic communications as an undergraduate student. In addition to his bachelor’s degree in English from Livingstone, Williams holds master’s degrees from Old Dominion University (Educational Leadership) and Hampton University (Sports Administration).
 
Williams is a native of Allendale, S.C.
