The North Carolina Central University Department of Athletics has named veteran sports writer and athletic communications professional Anthony Jeffries as its new Assistant Director of Sports Information. The announcement was made on Jan. 3, 2025.
Jeffries will be the department's primary media contact for women's basketball, volleyball, softball, and men's and women's golf and cross country.
In addition to his decades of sports writing experience, Jeffries is no stranger to North Carolina. Jeffries comes to Durham after a year as Director of Athletic Communications for William Peace University in Raleigh. He served as the primary media contact for all 21 of the university's programs and producing content for the department's official website, gopeacepacers.com.
Before William Peace, Jeffries was Athletics Communications Director at Shaw University for much of 2023, serving as the primary media contact for cross country, volleyball, women's basketball, soccer, bowling, women's track & field and softball.
From 2005-22, Jeffries was Sports Information Director at Saint Augustine's University, making his transition from newspapers to athletic communications.
Jeffries began his career in journalism, starting with a stint as an editorial assistant with the Greensboro News & Record from 1986-87, before moving on to sports reporter and copy editor for the paper from 1987-92.
From 1993-97, Jeffries was a sports reporter for The News & Observer in Raleigh, before moving to Chapel Hill to serve The Chapel Hill News in the same capacity from 1997 to 2002.
He was a news reporter for The Smithfield Herald from 2002-05.
Jeffries graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in professional English.
