Tony McRae joined the North Carolina Central University football program in 2022, and the 2024 will be his third with the Eagles. He currently serves as cornerbacks coach.

The 2022 season saw McRae help lead an Eagles defense that ranked second in the MEAC in scoring defense and total defense. Defensive back Khalil Baker was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, as NCCU won 10 games, took the MEAC title and earned a berth in the Cricket Celebration Bowl.

McRae saw three Eagles earn First Team All-MEAC honors on the defensive side of the ball in 2023, a season in which NCCU won nine games and made its first-ever NCAA FCS playoff appearance. Defensive back Jason Chambers had three interceptions for the Eagles, tied for the second most in the conference.

After college, McRae signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2016 as an undrafted free agent. He spent that year as a practice squad player for the Raiders and the Cincinnati Bengals, before signing with the Baltimore Ravens in 2017.

The 2017 season saw McRae return to the Bengals, and in 2018, he forced two fumbles in a game against the Ravens. He later signed with the Detroit Lions in 2020.

For his NFL career, McRae recorded 40 total tackles.

From 2012-15, McRae played at North Carolina A&T State University. As a senior, he was a Second Team All-MEAC honoree as a kick returner. He returned two kicks for touchdowns that season, while also racking up 55 total tackles and three interceptions.
The 2014 season saw McRae record 62 tackles and five interceptions, ranking 13th in all of FCS in passes defended, 15th in interceptions and fourth in kickoff return touchdowns. He returned a kick 95 yards for a touchdown in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge against Alabama A&M.
