Michael Sewell Jr. re-joined North Carolina Central University after a short stint in the spring of 2022 at East Carolina University as a defensive graduate assistant. Sewell spent the 2021 season at NCCU as defensive graduate assistant, working under Dan Owen with safeties and special teams.

Prior to NCCU, Sewell joined the Black Hills State University football staff in August of 2020 as a defensive graduate assistant, coaching the cornerbacks.

Before BHSU, Sewell was a defensive quality control coach at his alma mater University of New Mexico during the 2019 season. Sewell worked under Perry Eliano, assisting with UNM’s cornerbacks and special teams, handling practice planning, film breakdown and on-the-field coaching. Sewell also helped with statistical analysis and film preparation.

Sewell played nickelback at University of New Mexico under head coach Bob Davie and saw very little playing time his junior year, only totaling 12 tackles and 8 solo tackles. Sewell earned the starting job his senior year and totaled 57 tackles (34 solo), two sacks, two forced fumbles, and three pass deflections.

Before transferring to New Mexico, Sewell lettered at L.A. Valley College for coach Robert Tucker. There, he recorded 28 tackles (20 solo) in 2016, and was named Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-State. He was also named First Team All-Conference, was team captain for a team that went 11-0, and was named All-American by California junior college coaches. Sewell had four passes broken up and four interceptions, and scored two touchdowns, one on an interception and one on a blocked punt return. Sewell chose the Lobos over Cal Berkeley, Fresno State, South Alabama, Arkansas State and North Texas.

Born and raised in Palmdale, California, Sewell graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts in 2018. Sewell earned his Masters of Science Degree in Kinesiology & Recreation Administration from North Carolina Central University.
