North Carolina Central University alumna La’Tasha Bynum was named the university’s Head Cheerleading Coach during the 2022-23 season by Dr. Louis “Skip” Perkins, Director of Athletics.
Bynum joined the North Carolina Central University Cheerleading coaching staff as a volunteer in 2006. After many years of dedication and commitment to the program, she was named the Associate Head Cheer Coach in 2017 by LuAnn Edmonds-Harris, NCCU Head Cheer Coach and Director of Cheerleading Operations, 1992-2022.
Bynum brings more than 12 years of coaching experience to the program. She served as the NCCU Assistant Varsity Cheer Coach from 2012-16. Her duties included planning, attending, and leading practice sessions, tryouts, and sporting events without or in conjunction with the Head Coach. Bynum was also responsible for enforcing all NCCU student-athlete policies, providing other support where needed (i.e., orientation events, recruiting tours, fundraising events), and performing all other duties as assigned by the Head Cheer Coach and Director of Athletics. In 2015, Bynum pioneered one of the most memorable NCCU Cheer Alumni Homecoming reunions.
From 2006-10, Bynum served as the NCCU Junior Varsity Cheerleading Coach. She is a 2006 North Carolina Central University graduate with four years of Varsity Cheerleading experience while serving two years as a team captain and student-athlete. During her career as an NCCU Cheerleader, she was awarded 2006 Most Valuable Cheerleader and selected to the All-CIAA Cheerleading squad during her senior season.
Bynum is a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., and currently resides in Morrisville, N.C. Along with her coaching duties at NCCU, Bynum is employed with Alliance Health - Managed Care Organization, where she serves as an Integrated Health Consultant with the Transitions to Community Living Program. She is a member of the Sigma Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Bynum’s experience, versatility, passion, and knowledge of the sport make her an asset to the North Carolina Central University Department of Athletics and cheerleading program. "I am beyond honored to serve in this capacity at my esteemed alma mater, and I am looking forward to continuing the program’s substantial legacy and Tradition of Excellence," said Bynum.
