2001-02 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Cross-country and track senior Katerina Glosova receives numerous awards for both her athletic and academic excellence. During the 2001-02 athletic campaign, Glosova won her third consecutive CIAA Cross Country Championship and captured six individual conference titles during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. She also claimed honors as a National Champion by winning the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. Glosova's list of awards from the past year includes the 2001 NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association Women's South Atlantic Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Southeast Regional Indoor Track Female Athlete of the Year, and the 2002 CIAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. 
  • NCCU defeats Virginia State in the finals of the 2001 CIAA Bowling Championship to become the conference's first-ever women's bowling champion.
  • NCCU football finishes the 2001 campaign ranked atop the NCAA Division II in total defense, allowing just 187.2 yards per game. The Eagle defense was also ranked in the top eight of three other statistical categories: second in pass efficiency defense (73.1), sixth in scoring defense (12.8), and eighth in rushing defense (80.1). 
  • Freshman LiNida Blake earns All-Region honors at the 2001 NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Southeast Region Championships.
  • Sophomore running back Lawrence Fuller is voted to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District III Football Team, College Division. 
  • Two NCCU head coaches, Michael Lawson (Women's Cross Country and Women's Outdoor Track & Field) and Lina Stewart (Women's Bowling), are recognized as the 2001-02 CIAA Coach of the Year in their respective sports.
  • The Lady Eagle basketball team advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament "Sweet 16" for the first time in school history, achieved No. 1 ranking in the South Atlantic Region poll (Feb. 27 - Final Poll) for the first time in NCCU history, captured the CIAA Western Division regular season title for the third time in the past four years, finished second consecutive season with an undefeated record at home (riding a 24-game home court win streak), and reached the 20-win plateau for the third time in the past four seasons (the only three 20-win campaigns in the 27-year history of NCCU women's basketball).
  • Junior Jason Smoots claims his third National Championship by winning the 60 meter dash at the 2002 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston. 
  • Senior Katerina Glosova, voted as the 2002 CIAA Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after three-peating in the 1500m and 3000m runs, winning the 800m run, and running the anchor leg of the first place 4x400m relay squad, led the Lady Eagles to a second place effort at the2002 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Petersburg, VA, marking the highest outdoor team finish for the NCCU women in school history. 
  • Senior center Amba Kongolo became the first women's basketball student-athlete in NCCU and CIAA history to be drafted into the WNBA when the Phoenix Mercury selected her with the 56th pick.
  • Six NCCU student-athletes are among the 20 individuals from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association named to the fifth annual CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. Five of the 10 First Team honorees were from NCCU, including senior Ria Bazie (tennis), senior Katerina Glosova (cross country/track), sophomore Rhonda Lee (bowling), senior Lanelle Turner (softball) and senior Rachelle Zastoupil (volleyball). Senior Misha Johnson (tennis) earned Second Team honors.
  • Four NCCU student-athlete are voted to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District III College Division First Team in their respective sports. The honorees are senior Lanelle Turner (softball), senior Ria Bazie (tennis), sophomore Lawrence Fuller (football), and senior Katerina Glosova (cross country/track). Bazie and Glosova went on the earn Academic All-America honors.
  • NCCU head coach Michael Lawson is selected as the 2002 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.
  • NCCU cross country/track & field senior Katerina Glosova has been announced as the recipient of the 2002 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.
  • NCCU wins two National Championships and earns four All-American honors at the 2002 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. The men's 4x100-meter relay, consisting of sophomore Jamie Richardson, freshman Detric Branch, freshman Steven Enoch and junior Jason Smoots, put together their best time of the season (39.88) for an upset victory over favorites Fort Hays State (39.95) and Abilene Christian (40.02). It was NCCU’s first relay national title since 1970, when Ken Thompson, James Stewart, Floyd Williams and Larry Black won the 440-yard relay. Smoots then repeated as the National Champion in the 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 10.07, providing the junior with his fifth career national title. As a team the NCCU men placed fifth with 28 points, their best finish in 31 years (NCCU tied for fourth with 30 points in 1971). Four individuals earned All-America honors, including senior Katerina Glosova (2nd in 800m run), junior Kennisha Moten (5th in 400m dash), freshman Chanda Powell (7th in long jump), and Enoch (2nd in long jump).
  • For the third consecutive year, NCCU received the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, recognizing the top all-around women's program in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
  • Senior center Amba Kongolo has been voted to the 2002 Daktronics, Inc. Division II Women's Basketball All-America First Team, as selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
