2000-01 HIGHLIGHTS
  • NCCU junior shortstop Lanelle Turner selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America Softball Second Team, College Division. (June 7, 2001)
  • For the second consecutive year, North Carolina Central University received the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, recognizing the top all-around women's program in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. (May 30, 2001)
  • NCCU head track and field coach Michael Lawson selected as the 2001 U.S. Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Regional Outdoor Coach of the Year. (May 26, 2001)
  • NCCU sophomore Jason Smoots picked a good time to run his fastest time of the year ... the national championship event of the 100-meter dash, to win the national sprint title. Junior Kennisha Moten earns first individual All-America honors. (May 26, 2001)
  • Five NCCU student-athletes - Katerina Glosova, Lisa Hicks, Constance Murdock, Rachelle Zastoupil (First Team), and Lanelle Turner (Second Team) - are among the 20 individuals from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association that have been named to the fourth annual CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team.   • NCCU freshman Jameshia Levister finished third place in the women's individual medalist race of the 15th National Minority College Golf Championship. (May 13, 2001)
  • NCCU's Jason Smoots wins the 100m dash and 200m dash to earn honors as the Men's Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the 2001 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, while Katerina Glosova captures first place in the 1500m run and 3000m run. (April 21, 2001)
  • NCCU's Jimmy Boston grabs game-high 10 rebounds at annual Black College All-Star Classic in Baltimore, MD. (April 21, 2001)
  • NCCU freshman Jameshia Levister, a female playing in the No. 1 spot on the men's team, is recognized as the 2001 CIAA Men's Golf Rookie of the Year. (April 20, 2001)
  • NCCU's Carmen Williams claims conference champion honors in the women's javelin throw at the 2001 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Durham. (April 20, 2001)
  • The NCCU women's tennis team, for the first time since Mar. 18, 1999, has plenty to celebrate as they defeat the Lady Braves of Chowan College 7-2 in Durham, NC, for the program’s first victory in two years. (April 12, 2001)
  • NCCU junior center Amba Kongolo has been voted as a 2001 Daktronics Inc./CoSIDA NCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-American, as chosen by the national sports information directors association. (April 5, 2001)
  • NCCU women’s basketball head coach Joli Robinson has been selected as the 2001 WBCA Division II District 3 Coach of the Year, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced. (March 12, 2001)
  • NCCU sophomore Jason Smoots won the men's 55-meter dash to claim individual national champion honors at the 2001 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston, Massachusetts. (March 20, 2001)
  • NCCU junior center Amba Kongolo has been selected to the 2001 Daktronics Inc./CoSIDA NCAA Division II All-South Atlantic Region First Team, as chosen by the regional sports information directors. (March 6, 2001)

  • NCCU head coach Joli Robinson is announced as the 2001 CIAA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. (Feb. 25, 2001)
  • Amba Kongolo matches career-high with 27 points as Lady Eagles pounce on the Saint Paul’s Lady Tigers for a new school record 21st win of the season. (Feb. 22, 2001)
  • Amba Kongolo is crowned 2001 CIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year, while four other NCCU student-athletes earn post-season conference honors. (Feb. 22, 2001)
  • NCCU sophomore Jason Smoots wins the men's 55-meter dash at the 2001 CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, while Lady Eagles place second as a team. (Feb. 9, 2001)
  • The Lady Eagles established a new school record by defeating Saint Augustine's 56-41 for their eighth straight victory. (Jan. 6, 2001)
  • NCCU senior Jimmy Boston scored a career-high 31 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to spark the visiting Eagles to an 82-80 win over Fayetteville State at Capel Arena. (Jan. 4, 2001)
  • NCCU women's basketball posted its third largest margin of victory in school history with a 94-29 win over the visiting University of the District of Columbia. (Dec. 4, 2000)
  • NCCU women's basketball amassed 67 rebounds, including 35 offensive caroms, in a 72-51 win over Salem International in day one action of the 2000 Lady Eagle Classic. (Dec. 1, 2000)
  • NCCU sophomore Shawn Ray nets 24 points en route to a 79-70 overtime victory in the First Union Harvest Classic. (Nov. 18, 2000)
  • NCCU sophomore Katerina Glosova captures the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship and advances to the national championship event for the second straight year. (Nov. 4, 2000)
  • Sophomore Katerina Glosova finishes more than a minute ahead of the competition to repeat as the CIAA Women's Cross Country Champion. (Oct. 26, 2000)
  • NCCU battled back from a 15-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Virginia State, 33-32, courtesy of a 33-yard game-winning field goal by freshman kicker Jamal Molden with six seconds remaining. (Sept. 16, 2000)
  • Phil Spence, the former head boys' basketball coach at East Wake High School and a member of N.C. State's 1974 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship team, was announced as the new men's basketball head coach at NCCU in a press conference. (July 14, 2000)
