1999-2000 Year in Review

1999-2000 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Lady Eagles won the first volleyball conference championship in school history, dating back to 1974 when intercollegiate volleyball began at NCCU. 
  • Senior Rena Armwood and sophomore Latisha McEachern became the first two student-athletes at NCCU to win a conference championship in two different sports.  The duo were members of the first-ever softball conference championship team at NCCU, winning the CIAA Softball Tournament in 1998 and again in 1999, and were members of the first-ever volleyball championship in 1999. 
  • Lady Eagle volleyball coach Ingrid Wicker became the first head coach in school history to claim conference championships in two sports. Wicker led the NCCU softball (1998) and volleyball (1999) teams to their first-ever conference championships. 
  • Freshman Katerina Glosova became the first NCCU runner to qualify for and compete in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. 
  • Two North Carolina Central University coaches, head volleyball coach Ingrid Wicker and head cross country coach Michael Lawson, earned Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors. 
  • Senior linebacker Anthony Connally was named to the 1999 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-South Region Second Team.  The team captain finished the  season second in the CIAA with 109 tackles. 
  • NCCU student-athletes earned all-America honors in three events at the 2000 NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships in Boston. Freshman Jason Smoots placed third in the men's 55-meter dash with a time of 6.32.  The men's 4x400m relay team, consisting of junior Albert Newkirk, freshman Chris Waters, freshman Robert Williams, and sophomore Michael Patterson, bettered their fastest time of the season by more than three seconds to capture second place in 3:11.83, less than a half-second behind the winning team from Saint Augustine's.  Junior Cheron Clark recorded her fastest time of the season in the finals of the women's 400m dash to capture fourth place with a 56.40. 
  • Sophomore Katerina Glosova is named co-CIAA Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after running in five events, earning individual conference championships in the 1500m and 3000m runs and all-CIAA honors in the 800m run.  She also ran third leg in the 4x100m relay and anchor leg of the 4x400m relay.  Freshman Robert Williams was recognized as the CIAA Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete after capturing conference championships in the 100m and 200m dashes, while also earning all-CIAA praise in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. 
  • NCCU announced Lin Dawson as its new Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at a press conference Tuesday (May 9) at the LeRoy T. Walker Physical Education Complex on the Durham campus. 
  • Four NCCU student-athletes, Katerina Glosova, Lisa Hicks, Lanelle Turner and Rachelle Zastoupil, are selected to the 2000 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team. 
  • NCCU freshman Jason Smoots placed third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.60 to earn All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Paul Derr Track in Raleigh, NC. 
  • The Lady Eagles capture the 2000 CIAA Loretta Taylor All-Sports Award for Women at the annual conference awards luncheon in Hampton, VA.  NCCU's Kyle Serba is named CIAA Sports Information Director of the Year for the second consecutive season and the third time in four years.
