The strength and conditioning staff will enhance the mental and physical performance of each student-athlete in order to optimize athletic success. Philosophy
The philosophy of the North Carolina Central University’s Strength and Conditioning program revolves around explosive power. This is achieved through the predominate use of closed chain or ground-based multi-jointed movement patterns while concurrently training the specific metabolic demands of each sport.

Training Facility
The weight room is located in the L.T. Walker Complex and is the training home for all of NCCU’s teams. The 4,500 square foot strength facility features a variety of free weights, power stations, benches, and racks. The weight room underwent remodeling in 2012 to increase the square footage and flow of the workouts. Add in a state-of-the-art sound system and high-definition TV and this weight room has it all.

Volunteer Internships
The North Carolina Central University Strength and Conditioning department has internship opportunities available for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. The internship program benefits both the department and volunteer coaches. Interns will gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of athletic performance. Volunteers will have opportunities to work with all 14 varsity athletic sports, which total more than 300 student-athletes.
Duties
Interns will be responsible for assisting the director and assistant strength and conditioning coaches in all facets of the internship program, including but not limited to warm-ups, stretching, strength training, conditioning, athlete assessments, and weight room maintenance. Additional responsibilities will be given based on experience, comprehension, athlete interaction, and work ethic.
Compensation
This is an unpaid internship. Volunteers will gain valuable hands-on experience that will prepare them for potential graduate assistantships and related employment in the field of athletic performance. The Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association requires that all Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) candidates work under a master strength coach to become certified. NCCU is one of a few schools to have a master strength coach to help mentor and fulfill the SCCC certification requirement.
Qualifications
Strong desire to become a full-time strength and conditioning coach of collegiate or professional athletics; work a minimum of 20 hours per week; bachelor’s degree or in progress of earning a bachelor’s degree; working towards SCCC certification; CPR certification.
