DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central men's tennis team sent off its seniors in style with a 4-0 sweep of Shaw on Friday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts. The Eagles secured the clinch with a dominant performance over the Bears.
NCCU (13-7) began the day by honoring its five seniors, Lucas Artigas, Neiman Sneed, Kareem Abdul Hakim, Rodrigo Alves, and Naresh Bharathy, in a pre-match ceremony. The contest marked the team's final home match before postseason play begins next week.
The Eagles claimed the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Alves and Abdul Hakim earned a win in the top spot, while Antoni Pankowski and Bharathy secured the point at No. 2. The match featuring Sneed and Artigas went unfinished.
In singles play, Alves extended the lead with a pair of 6-2 wins at the No. 2 slot. Bharathy followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Eduardo Brustia at No. 1 singles.
Artigas delivered the clinching point at No. 4 singles, closing out the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
With the MEAC Tennis Championships set for next week, the Eagles enter as the No. 2 seed and will compete in Friday's semifinals on April 24 at noon. NCCU will face the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal matchup between No. 3 Norfolk State and No. 6 Coppin State. All matches will be held at Cary Tennis Park with the championship featured on Saturday, April 25 at noon.
