ORLANDO, Fla. – In its first match of Spring Break week in Florida, the North Carolina Central men's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over PennWest Edinboro on Sunday afternoon at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
The Eagles improve to 4-5 on the season, with three more matches scheduled this week. Edinboro falls to 1-4 overall.
NCCU swept all three doubles matches to secure the first point heading into singles play.
Freshman Pol Puig Montiel earned the first singles win for NC Central in the No. 4 position, defeating Arsen Tabaldyev 6-2, 6-1. Antoni Pankowski followed with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the No. 2 position. Pankowski now holds a 7-2 singles record this season.
Santiago Pinna and Rodrigo Alves extended the Eagles' lead to 5-0. Playing at No. 3 singles, Pinna did not drop a game in the first set before closing out the second set 6-3. Alves defeated Leon Grassnickel in the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 6-4. Both Eagles are now riding five-match singles winning streaks.
Leo Fortier-Gariepy wrapped up the day in a hard-fought No. 5 singles match. Edinboro's Emiel Tidman won the first set 6-4, but Fortier-Gariepy responded with a 6-1 second set to force a match tiebreaker. Fortier-Gariepy prevailed 10-8 in the tiebreak to secure the victory.
The Eagles continue competition on Tuesday, March 10, facing MEAC foe Howard at 11 a.m. at the USTA National Campus.
