Eagles’ Five-Match Win Streak Snapped by Longwood

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central men's tennis team's five-match winning streak ended Thursday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to Longwood at Cary Tennis Park.

NCCU (8-6) dropped the doubles point and entered singles play trailing 1-0.

Longwood (8-5) quickly built momentum, winning No. 3 and No. 5 singles to take a 3-0 lead. At No. 4 singles, Santiago Pinna claimed a hard-fought first set 7-6 after a tiebreaker. Trailing 1-0 in the second set, Pinna retired from the match as Longwood clinched the team victory, ending Pinna's nine-match winning streak.

At No. 6 singles, fellow freshman Pol Puig Montiel also battled through a first-set tiebreaker but fell 7-6 and dropped the second set. In No. 1 singles, Naresh Bharathy pushed his match to three sets, winning the first 6-4 before falling in a pair of 6-3 sets.

Rodrigo Alves closed out the day at No. 2 singles in a tight contest. He won the opening set 7-5 before dropping the second by the same score. In the deciding 10-point tiebreaker, Longwood's Daniel Borisov secured a 10-6 win to finish the sweep.

NC Central will look to rebound at the MEAC Round-Up this weekend in Norfolk, Virginia, facing Morgan State on Saturday, March 28, and Coppin State on Sunday, March 29 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
