DURHAM, N.C. –
Aysia Hinton had a record-setting night against William Peace on Tuesday.
The NCCU guard erupted for 36 points on 12 three-pointers to lead the Eagles to a 103-51 women's basketball victory over the Pacers at McDougald-McLendon Arena in their final non-conference contest of the season.
Hinton set program records for most points and most three-pointers by an NCCU player in the Division I era. She sizzled from deep, connecting of 12 of 30 treys for an efficient 40 percent. Her 12
th three-pointer pushed the Eagles over the century mark (101-48) for the second time this season.
The Eagles' long-range shooter swished six three-pointers for 18 points in the first half.
"When she hit those first six, I told her at halftime, 'we are still going to play our game but will give you a shot at breaking the record, and she came through," NCCU Head Coach
Terrence Baxter said.
Hinton broke the previous single-game scoring record of 35 points previously held by Jori Nwachukwu against Fayetteville State in 2007, a span of 19 season. She also surpassed Kimeira Burks, who was the previous record-holder for most three-pointers in a game. Burks connected on 10 from deep against Mid-Atlantic Christian in 2023.
"I knew 10 was the record because Kimeira Burks broke the record before and I was coaching her when she did it," Baxter said. "Kimeira called me right before Christmas break and said, 'Hey, don't let [Hinton] break my record.' I told her on the phone if the opportunity comes, we are going to give her a chance, and tonight was Aysia's chance."
Hinton said a breath-taking "yes," when asked if this was her best game ever. The only other time she played a game like Monday was as a prep player.
"In high school, I was one off from breaking the three-point record," said Hinton, a Durham, N.C., native. "I tied the record with eight threes at Jordan."
The NCCU guard led a balanced scoring attack for the Eagles, who shot 48.2 percent from the floor. Diana Blake and
Morgan Callahan both posted double-doubles with Blake registering 12 points and 10 rebounds and Callahan finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Nia Young and
Natalie Jasper both scored 11 points and Young added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Amaya Harris dished out eight assists and
TeKeyah Bland snatched six rebounds in her season debut.
Najah Lane and
Madjiguene Pene chipped in six points each and Pene added two blocks.
The Eagles sprinted out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back. The score was 26-9 after the first quarter and the margin continued to grow as the game progressed.
With NCCU ahead 70-25 in the third quarter, the only question left was if Hinton would break the single-game three-point and scoring records. She broke both on one shot.
Hinton, who set the program record for three-point attempts, scored a career-high 36 one night after Finger dropped 30 points in a 69-62 home win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday. It is the first time an NCCU player scored 30 points in consecutive games in the Division I era.
