Eagles Battle Back But Fall 64-63 To Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan Callahan scored a game-high 20 points and North Carolina Central almost rallied back after letting a 10-point second-half lead slip away in a 64-63 MEAC women's basketball loss to Morgan State at Hill Field House on Thursday night.

Callahan was nearly perfect from the floor, making 9 of 10 shots for the Eagles (3-12, 0-2 MEAC). The standout forward added five rebounds and a game-high four steals.

The NCCU forward nearly sent the game into overtime. Her steal and jumper in the final seconds would have tied the game but the bucket was ruled a two-pointer.

Najah Lane contributed 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting including a three-pointer that pulled the Eagles within 60-59 with over 1:30 left in the fourth quarter. Morgan State (2-16, 1-1 MEAC) extended its lead to three but Callahan answered with a layup to close the gap to 62-61 with 28 seconds remaining.

After two Morgan State free throws with nine seconds left, NCCU misfired from long range which would have tied the score. Callahan's late steal and bucket closed out the scoring.

North Carolina Central, which won three of the last four meetings against Morgan State, led 29-22 at halftime and 34-24 early in the third quarter. But the Bears scored 20 straight points to surge ahead 44-34. The Eagles were outscored 23-13 in the third quarter.

Trailing 45-42 heading into the fourth quarter, the Eagles stayed within striking distance. They cut the deficit to one point five times but never led in the quarter.

Aniya Finger added eight points and two steals and Natalie Jasper scored a season-high seven points for NCCU. Dianna Blake chipped in six points and five rebounds.

The Eagles shot 49 percent, which is their second-highest this season, and forced 21 Morgan State turnovers. They entered the contest ranked 18th nationally in forcing turnovers. Morgan State shot 52.1 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
