ORANGEBURG, S.C. – On a night when neither North Carolina Central nor South Carolina State found the range from three-point range,
Morgan Callahan dominated inside to give the Eagles a 68-63 MEAC women's basketball win Thursday in the regular-season finale.
Callahan dominated inside with 22 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks for the Eagles, who opened a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter before holding off the Bulldogs at SHM Memorial Center.
The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for the Eagles, who now turn their attention to the MEAC Tournament, set for March 12-15 in Norfolk, Va. NCCU (9-20, 6-8 MEAC) will either be the No. 5 or No. 6 seed.
Both teams combined for three three-pointers, but Callahan took care of business in the paint to expand a 44-43 third quarter lead to 63-48 with just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter. She scored 13 points to key a 19-5 run between the third and fourth quarters.
The Eagles' surge was just enough to hold off a late rally by the Bulldogs, who cut the margin to five with 13 seconds remaining.
Aysia Hinton iced the game for the Eagles with two free throws for a 68-61 lead with 10 seconds left.
Callahan was one point off her career high but reached a career-high in rebounds in the victory. Among the nation's leaders in minutes played, Callahan was on the court the entire 40 minutes. She was 6 of 11 from the floor and 10 of 15 from the free throw line. The NCCU forward has over 1,000 points and 600 rebounds in her career.
Dianna Blake and
Tierney Coleman each added 10 points for the Eagles.
Victoria Morris (nine points) and
Jada Creech (eight points) combined to score all 17 of the Eagles' bench points.
Led by Callahan's 18 boards, the Eagles won the rebounding battle 47-33 and limited the Bulldogs to 28.8 percent shooting. NCCU's rebounding and defense offset 34 turnovers which led to 32 Bulldog points.
Callahan grabbed seven offensive rebounds for NCCU, which held an 18-6 advantage in second chance points.
The Eagles struggled in the second quarter the previous two games but Thursday was different. They outscored the Bulldogs 20-11 in the second quarter to erase a 19-16 first-quarter deficit to take a 36-30 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs (2-28, 1-13 MEAC) were led by Shaunice Reed with 11 points. They will either be a No. 7 or No. 8 seed in the MEAC Tournament.
