GREENVILLE, S.C. - While many college students opted for beaches and exotic locales during spring break, a group of North Carolina Central football players chose a different path - investing in their professional futures.
At the suggestion of NCCU Player Development Coordinator Darian Iverson, four current and former Eagles -
Markell Quick,
Juan Velarde,
Donquarius Parker and
Malcolm Reed - traveled to Greenville, S.C., for Career Discovery Week held March 9-13.
The program, hosted by Scholar AthELITE, a company founded by former Clemson All-America football player Rashard Hall, offered a four-day experience focused on career exploration, professional networking and industry exposure. Participants visited eight companies and attended a career fair on the final day.
The attendees included 16 student-athletes from five colleges and universities. Participants were divided into teams, each tasked with researching the companies they visited during the week. Team captains ensured their groups asked thoughtful questions during company Q&A sessions.
The trip addressed a common challenge among college athletes: limited internship opportunities due to year-round training and other commitments. This program allowed them to interact with entrepreneurs and executives, gaining practical insights beyond classroom theory.
"This trip was life-changing," said Parker, a junior defensive end and community leader. "It helped me define my vision and develop my leadership confidence."
Velarde, who recently completed his season as an Eagles punter-kicker and is now an MBA student, expressed gratitude for the experience. "I'm very thankful," Velarde said, "I hope more teammates can attend next year."
NCCU Head Coach
Trei Oliver emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, "We're committed to developing our players holistically. While their performance on the field is crucial, preparing them for life after football is equally vital. This Career Discovery Week provides invaluable exposure and networking opportunities, setting our players up for success in their future careers. We encourage all our athletes to take advantage of such programs."
