Callahan Records Double-Double In Eagles' Loss To Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Morgan Callahan posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds but North Carolina Central fell behind by double digits in the second half to fall 81-64 to Howard at Burr Gymnasium on Saturday.

The loss was the second straight for the Eagles, who dropped to 3-4 in the MEAC and 6-16 overall in the MEAC women's basketball standings. Howard improved to 5-1 in the conference and 12-9 overall.

Shakiria Foster added 14 points and Jada Tiggett nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds in addition to two blocks and three steals. Kyla Bryant chipped in nine points for the Eagles.

Bryant nailed a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to pull the Eagles within 34-32 at the half. But Howard outscored the Eagles 47-32 in the second half, including 23-14 in the third period, to win by double figures.

Both teams combined for 58 turnovers but the Bison capitalized off Eagles' miscues, scoring 35 turnover points. The Eagles finished with 32 turnovers and Howard had 26 turnovers.

The Eagles, keyed by Callahan and Tiggett, scored 36 points in the paint. The double-double was Callahan's fifth this season and the 16th of her career.

After Saturday's game, Callahan is 42 points away from reaching the 1,000-point career milestone. She already has over 600 rebounds in her career.

Zennia Thomas scored a game-high 25 points to lead five Howard double-figure scorers. Sa'lah Hemmingway added 13 points off the bench.

The Eagles return home for two games in three days starting Saturday, Feb. 15, against Coppin State. Game time is 2 p.m. at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
