ELON, N.C. – North Carolina Central rallied to tie Elon midway in the game before falling 13-7 in the Elon Softball Classic at Hunt Softball Park on Saturday night.
The Eagles (0-4 overall) collected season highs in runs (7) and hits (7).
Makiya Graves led the way offensively with two RBIs on 2-of-4 hitting and
Jaden Davis drove in a run on 2-of-4 batting.
Kendall Smith added a double while
Nyla Rodgers and
Cameron Frye each collected a single.
The Eagles, behind a Davis RBI and four Elon errors, scored five runs in the fourth inning to erase a 5-0 deficit and tie the game at 5-5.
Daiyah Bailey started the rally by stealing second as a pinch runner and later scoring on an error.
Davis singled to score
Samaria Jackson and Rodgers scored on an error after singling to reach base. Another Elon error scored both
Tyler Suttles and
Kristin Corner.
Elon (1-3 overall) regained the lead 11-5 heading into the sixth but Graves hit a two-run left centerfield double to cut the margin to 11-7. Smith and
Kia Borum scored on Graves' hit. Elon tacked on two runs in the bottom sixth for the final score.
Kaitlyn Wells was 3-of-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored for Elon.
The Eagles will travel to Covington, Ga. next week for the HBCU Collegiate Invitational, set for Feb. 14-16. NCCU will play five games in three days.
