NCCU Outshoots Charleston But Third Quarter Proves Costly In Loss

DURHAM, N.C. – Four players scored in double figures for North Carolina Central but the Eagles couldn't overcome an early second-half spurt by College of Charleston in a 75-60 women's basketball loss at McDougald-McLendon Arena on Tuesday.

NCCU is now 1-3 overall while Charleston remained unbeaten at 4-0.

The Cougars scored 12 unanswered points in the third quarter to stretch a four-point halftime lead to 50-34. The Eagles whittled their deficit to single digits several times but would get no closer than seven points.

The Eagles pulled within 60-52 on Victoria Morris' three-pointer with under seven minutes left in the fourth quarter but the Cougars went on a 15-8 run for the final score.

Aniya Finger and Aysia Hinton both scored 12 points to lead the Eagles. Morgan Callahan and Morris each collected 10 points and eight rebounds and Najah Lane dished out nine assists and added two steals. Finger grabbed seven rebounds and her, Callahan and Dianna Blake each had two blocks.

NCCU outshot Charleston 39.1 percent to 32 percent and held Taryn Barbot, the nation's second-leading scorer, to 14 points on 2 of 12 shooting. Barbot entered the non-conference contest averaging 28.3 points per game.

The Eagles' quickness forced the Cougars to mishandle the ball and misfire on several close shots and layups, but Charleston took advantage of the free throw line (22 of 27 compared to 1 of 4 for NCCU) to build its lead.

The free throws, combined with 25 NCCU turnovers, kept Charleston in front most of the contest. The Cougars outscored the Eagles 28-14 in turnover points.

Charleston, the nation's leading rebounding team, held a 53-42 edge on the boards including 24-14 on the offensive end but the Eagles held their own inside. In fact, the Eagles outscored the visitors in the paint 36-34.

Both Finger and Callahan battled foul trouble but the NCCU bench stepped up, outscoring Charleston 24-8. Hinton, the MEAC three-point leader, nailed four treys and Nia Young and Blake combined for 10 points.

Hinton's three-pointer closed the Eagles within 38-34 at halftime before Charleston's third-period run.
