BALTIMORE, Md. - MEAC Player of the Week
Kyla Bryant registered a double-double of 22 points and 12 assists for North Carolina Central in an 84-79 MEAC basketball loss to Morgan State at Hill Field House. The contest was postponed one day to Tuesday due to inclement weather.
The double-double was the second of Bryant's two-year collegiate career at NCCU. Her first double double was part of a triple-double of 21 points, 10 assists and 10 steals against Mid-Atlantic Christian as a freshman last season. Her 12 assists is a career-high for the sophomore guard.
Bryant, who added five rebounds, one steal and one block, led a balanced scoring attack. Freshman guard
Shakiria Foster produced 17 points, five rebounds and five steals and graduate forward
Morgan Callahan contributed 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard
Aysia Hinton chipped in 12 points, four rebounds and two steals for the Eagles (0-2 MEAC, 2-14 overall). Foster was named MEAC Rookie of the Week and Callahan was selected MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Bryant tallied 12 points and six assists in the second half to keep the Eagles within striking distance. The Bears (2-0 MEAC, 9-8 overall) led by nine in the second half, but the Eagles pulled within one on two Bryant free throws late in the third period. The Eagles trailed between two and four points in the fourth period before a late Bears' surge put NCCU behind by 10.
The Eagles continued to compete as they pulled within six at 82-76 on two Callahan free throws with under a minute remaining. They misfired on two 3-pointers and a 2-pointer before Hinton connected on a trey to pull the Eagles within one possession at the 11-second mark. The Bears canned two free throws with two seconds left to seal the win.
Naya Ojukwu had game-highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds while Michaela Boggans had 20 points for Morgan State, which outscored NCCU 50-30 in the paint and 39-9 in bench points. The Eagles connected on 7 of 19 three-pointers and 20 of 27 free throws (74.1 percent) to stay close to the Bears.
After a two-game road trip in Baltimore, the Eagles return home to McDougald-McLendon Arena for home games on Saturday (Jan. 11) and Monday (Jan. 13). NCCU hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Delaware State on Monday at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
