NORFOLK, Va. – The North Carolina Central University track & field teams swept Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekly awards on the oval as freshman Zion Amadi was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Week and sophomore Melanne Sutton won the Women's Track Athlete of the Week honor for the second time this season. Both awards were announced by the conference office on Friday afternoon.
Amadi won two seeded race events at the JDL Flat is Fast Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday, Jan. 26. The Burlington, N.C. native ran 22.11 in the men's 200m event and 50.01 in the 400m, both of which are personal records. Amadi's time in the 200m pushed him into the top 10 in the MEAC this season, sitting in ninth.
Sutton's new personal record of 7.49 in the 60m race at the JDL Fast Track earned her a place atop the podium and the third-fastest time in the conference this season. She also won the 200m seeded race at 25.58 locking up two victories last weekend. Sutton (Greenville, N.C.) earned the same weekly honor in early December for her performance at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-Off.
The Eagles will spend the next week preparing for the Liberty Open on Feb. 7-8 hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
