BALTIMORE, Md. – The North Carolina Central University softball team returned to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action after playing its first doubleheader this week against non-conference competition. On Saturday the Eagles split a doubleheader at Morgan State University to open the series.
NCCU was on both sides of two 9-1 results, falling in the first game and triumphing against Morgan State in the second.
Freshman Samaria Jackson tallied three hits, two runs and three RBIs through both games. Freshman Tyler Suttles and sophomores Takia Nichols and Makyia Graves also had multiple hits in a single game. Junior Jaden Davis handled pitching duties in the second game, dealing four strikeouts.
NC Central (10-28, 6-5 MEAC) and Morgan State (20-14, 9-2 MEAC) will wrap up the series on Sunday with the final game set for noon.
GAME ONE: Morgan State 9, NC Central 1 (6 Inn.)
NC Central was down 1-0 heading into the top of the third before the Eagles landed on the scoreboard.
Suttle scored NCCU's only run in the first game after a single from junior Jai'lyn Edwards to right field brought her teammate home.
The Bears broke the tie during their next at-bat delivering two runs to close the inning and tallied six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close out the game.
Freshman Xenna Tompkins (1-5) pitched for the Eagles with junior Ashanti Eubanks closing out the game.
GAME TWO: NC Central 9, Morgan State 1
NCCU responded in the second game bringing home nine runs including three against three different MSU pitchers.
Davis (6-13) took the circle allowing only two hits and one run from the Bears. She has won at least one game in every NCCU series against MEAC teams this season.
Several Eagles made it home safely including Suttles, Nichols, and Graves while senior Hailey Batista, redshirt senior Ivory Jones and Jackson each had two runs in the game. Batista also had two RBIs for NCCU.
