NCCU Men’s Tennis Defeats Coppin State to Advance to MEAC Semifinals

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team swept Coppin State University 4-0 in its quarterfinal match at the 2024 MEAC Tennis Championships on Thursday afternoon.

NCCU (8-14) started off the match winning the doubles point before singles competition. Senior Shaka Cristellotti and redshirt freshman Lucas Artigas won 6-0 in No.3 Doubles and junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega and freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy collected a 6-4 victory at the No.2 Doubles slot.

MEAC Player of the Year Hidalgo Vega scored a pair of 6-0 sets at No.1 Singles. Junior Oliver Saarinen won No.5 Singles in a 6-2, 6-0 match adding to the Eagles' total.

Sophomore Naresh Bharathy clinched the winning point in No.4 Singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph to close out the contest.

Kareem Abdul Hakim, Fortier-Gariepy and Cristellotti's singles matches went unfinished as the tournament format is play to clinch.

The Eagles survive and advance to the semifinals to face No.2 Norfolk State University on Friday at noon at the Cary Tennis Park. The match will also be streamed to subscribers of ESPN+.
