Bharathy and Hidalgo Vega Excel in NCCU’s Loss to Davidson

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team was defeated 4-2 in a play-to-clinch match against Davidson College on Saturday afternoon at the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts. Junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega and sophomore Naresh Bharathy each earned singles victories in the contest.

NCCU (6-11, 3-0 MEAC) started the match with sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim and junior Oliver Saarinen succeeding in No.1 Doubles 6-2. Davidson would go on to secure the doubles point after winning No. 2 and 3 Doubles, winning the No.2 slot in tiebreaking fashion over Hidalgo Vega and freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy.

Hidalgo Vega earned the first point for the Eagles with a No.1 Singles victory. The current MEAC Player of the Week continued his winning streak to eight singles wins in a row, defeating his Wildcat opponent 6-2, 6-3.

Bharathy fought after a close first set in No.4 Singles. With a 6-6 tie, Bharathy won the tiebreaker 8-6 to take the first set 7-6. He would come out on top 6-4 in the second for the point.

Davidson (7-9, 2-3 Atlantic 10) clinched the match with a No.6 Singles victory over redshirt freshman Lucas Artigas 6-0, 6-1.

The Eagles travel to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on Friday, April 5 at 2 p.m. for another non-conference match.
