NCCU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior shortstop Jaylah Barr had four hits and junior Jaden Davis was the winning pitcher in both games as the North Carolina Central University softball team swept a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Norfolk State University by scores of 3-0 and 5-3 on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles (7-21, 3-2) and Spartans (2-28, 1-4) will play the final game of the MEAC series on Friday at 11 a.m.

GAME ONE: NC Central 3, Norfolk State 0

Davis hurled her second shutout of the season while racking up a career-high 12 strikeouts. Davis only allowed four hits – all singles in four different innings – and had one stretch where she fanned five consecutive Spartans between the sixth and seventh innings.

The Eagles provided Davis with some run support early with one run in the first and two more in the second and she made it hold up. NCCU captured the lead just two batters in the game with freshman Tyler Suttles reaching scoring position on an opening error and then immediately scoring on an RBI-groundout by junior Jai'lyn Edwards.

Senior Hailey Batista launched her team-high fourth home run of the season in the top of the second to finish off NCCU's scoring. Batista blasted her two-run homer over the fence in left field after senior Maegan Garrison singled.

Barr had the only hit for the Eagles over the final five innings, but that did not matter with Davis in the circle.

GAME TWO: NC Central 5, Norfolk State 3

Junior Ashanti Eubanks preserved another win for Davis as the Eagles held off Norfolk State in the nightcap. Davis (4-10) made the start again, and tossed another 5 2/3 strong innings to earn her third MEAC win of the season over NCCU's first five league games. Eubanks only allowed one single in her 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to collect her first save of the season.

Six different Eagles racked up 10 total hits for the maroon and gray with Barr leading the way with three hits. Barr had an RBI-single in the first as NCCU once again scored in the opening frame against the Spartans before she added a couple other singles in the third and fifth innings.

Barr, who has a four-game hit streak, has produced a trio of three-hit games so far this season.

Garrison and sophomore Makiya Graves both supplied NCCU with a run-producing double while Edwards scored twice as the defending champions moved over .500 in league play.

Junior Rylie Gilbreath highlighted play for Norfolk State with three hits and one RBI.
