NCCU Pushes Past Coppin State Late for Big Road Win

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior forward Morgan Callahan scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to help lift the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team to a 52-44 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road win over Coppin State University on Saturday afternoon.

In a battle of two Eagle programs that were tied for fourth place in the league standings entering the day, NCCU outscored Coppin State by a 21-8 margin in the fourth quarter to complete the season-series sweep.

NC Central (13-14 Overall, 7-5 MEAC) trailed after each of the first three quarters, shooting just 25.6 percent from the field over those first 30 minutes of play. However, the Eagles heated up to shoot 61.5 percent in the fourth quarter to help snap a three-game losing streak.

Callahan once again led the victorious Eagles in the scoring column, netting her 19 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and 5 of 7 precision from the free throw line. She also contributed five rebounds, two steals and one block.

After Coppin State hit the opening basket of the fourth quarter to stretch its lead to seven points at 38-31, NCCU scored 13 unanswered points to take over the momentum. Junior guard Janiah Jones hit a game-tying 3-pointer and then Callahan, who started the run with back-to-back layups, hit an 18-foot shot from the right wing to put the visiting Eagles ahead for the first time since the score was 12-11. Junior forward Aniya Finger then hit a floater in the paint and senior guard Tippy Robertson capped the key run with a turnaround jumper in the paint.

Coppin State (9-17, 6-6) showed some fight and scored the next six points to level the score for the final time at 44-44, but consecutive layups by Finger and Callahan with under two minutes left was the final knockout blow by NCCU.

Robertson was NCCU's second leading scorer with seven points while Jones tallied six points. Finger returned to NCCU's lineup and provided all four of her points in the fourth quarter.

NCCU matched CSU with 41 rebounds with NCCU's guards doing a great job crashing the glass against a Coppin State squad that has the league's leading rebounder in Laila Lawrence. Senior guard Kimeira Burks pulled down seven boards for the maroon and gray while Robertson and freshman guard Kyla Bryant each secured six rebounds.

Sophomore Angel Jones led the host Eagles with 13 points. Lawrence, who is CSU's leading scorer on the season, did finish with a game-high 11 rebounds, but she was held to seven points by NCCU's defense.

NC Central will finish its road trip to Baltimore with a MEAC game at Morgan State University on Monday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m.
