NCCU Held Scoreless in Two Games at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte secured a 6-0 and 10-0 non-conference doubleheader sweep of visiting North Carolina Central University on Saturday.

Sophomore Takia Nichols had a double in the first game and drew a walk in the second game to extend her reached base streak to nine games.

NC Central (4-14) will next play five games at the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina University from Friday-Sunday, March 8-10.

GAME ONE: Queens 6, NC Central 0

Nichols hit a two-out double to right field in the top of the sixth inning to spoil a no-hit bid by Queens starting pitcher Autumn Courtney, but it would be the only hit by the Eagles.

Courtney (6-2) recorded 15 of her 21 outs needed in her one-hit shutout via the strikeout.

Five Royals had an RBI in the six-run victory with shortstop Kayla Smith leading Queens from atop the order with two hits, two runs and a stolen base.

GAME TWO: Queens 10, NC Central 0 (5 Innings)

The Royals exploded for 10 runs between the fourth and fifth innings to complete the doubleheader sweep and extend their win streak to four consecutive games. Queens (9-6) was held both scoreless and hitless through the first three innings by freshman pitcher Xenna Tompkins, but then scored 10 runs on seven hits, four walks and one NCCU error over the next two frames.

Starting pitcher Abby Craver (2-1) tallied the complete-game shutout with five strikeouts and Smith once again sparked the offense for Queens with two more hits, two RBI and another stolen base.

NCCU put its first two runners on base in the second with Nichols drawing a walk and senior Ivory Jones singling down the left-field line, but Craver got the next three outs to keep the Eagles off the board. Craver retired NCCU in order in the other four innings with Jones having the only maroon and gray hit.
