COVINGTON, Ga. – The North Carolina Central University softball team split a pair of one-run games on day one of the HBCU Softball Collegiate Invitational at the Turner Lake Softball Complex on Friday, defeating Alabama State University, 4-3, before falling to Alcorn State University, 7-6.
NC Central (2-5) will play two more games in the HBCU Softball Collegiate Invitational on Saturday with contests against Jackson State University (noon) and Prairie View A&M University (4 p.m.).
GAME ONE: NC Central 4, Alabama State 3

Kendall Smith hit a grand slam and junior pitcher
Ashanti Eubanks made those four runs hold up as the Eagles edged the Hornets by one run.
Smith, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, launched her first collegiate home run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Her grand slam over the center field fence gave NCCU a 4-1 lead. Senior

Tyler Suttles walked to load up the bases for Smith.
Alabama State (1-4) scored a pair of runs in the top of the third to pull within one run before Eubanks shut down the Hornets for the final four innings.
Eubanks (2-1) tallied five strikeouts in her second win of the season.
Smith accounted for two of NCCU's seven hits.
GAME TWO: Alcorn State 7, NC Central 6
The Eagles held a late 6-4 lead, but the Braves took advantage of some NCCU errors and rallied with a three-run sixth inning to secure the narrow victory. Alcorn (3-3) leveled its record, scoring five unearned runs.
Smith continued her sizzling play with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first inning. She would eventually score to give NCCU the early edge. Alcorn scored four runs in the top of the fourth to pull ahead, but NCCU scored in the home half of each of the next three innings to grab its late 6-4 advantage.
The Eagles' scoring was highlighted by a solo home run by junior pitcher
Jaden Davis and a two-run home by senior catcher
Hailey Batista. Davis also had a squeeze bunt single to finish to match Batista with two RBI.
NC Central committed five total errors.
