Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bryant’s Jumper Leads Eagles to Second Straight Win

DURHAM, N.C. Sophomore guard Kyla Bryant's jumper with three seconds remaining gave the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team its second straight win, a 77-76 victory over Furman on Monday in McDougald-McLendon Arena.

The Eagles are now 2-12 on the season.

Freshman guard Shakiria Foster led N.C. Central with a career-high 24 points, going 9-for-13 from the floor and draining three 3-pointers. She's scored in double figures in four straight, including two straight 20-point efforts. Bryant added 22 points, behind eight field goals and three treys, while also dishing out a career-high nine assists.

Bryant has scored at least 20 in back-to-back games.

Junior forward Bradyn Griffin came off the bench to add 13 points for her first double-digit effort as an Eagle and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Eagles shot better than 50% from the floor for the first time this season, going 28-for-55 (50.9%) from the floor. They were also 8-for-18 from behind the arc–their 44.4% clip from distance the second-best mark of the year.

Furman led 34-28 at the half, and that lead grew to as many as 18 in the third quarter, when a Raina McGowens layup put Furman up 52-34 with 4:17 left in the frame.

But the Eagles answered with a 17-3 run, cutting the lead to 55-51 with 44 seconds left in the third quarter after a Foster 3-pointer. Bella LaChance hit a pair of free throws nine seconds later to give Furman a 57-51 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

There were five lead changes in the fourth quarter alone. Foster hit a three on the break with 6:36 remaining to give the Eagles a 65-64 lead, before Furman answered. With 54 seconds left, Furman led 76-72 on a McGowens fastbreak layup.

Thirteen seconds later, Foster cut the lead to one with a three.

Furman had a look from deep in the closing seconds to retake the lead, but the shot missed the mark. The Eagles called a timeout following the defensive rebound, setting up the play that led to Bryant's game winner.

Furman turned the ball over on its final possession.

Furman shot 44.3% (27-for-61) from the floor and went 7-for-21 (33.3%) from behind the arc, while holding a 38-27 edge on the glass.

Kate Johnson led Furman (9-6) with 17 points.

The Eagles will open conference play on Saturday, traveling to Baltimore, Md., to take on Coppin State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
