NCCU Blasts into the MEAC Softball Championship Title Game

NORFOLK, Va. – Third-seed North Carolina Central University scored 10 runs in just four-plus innings to run rule fifth-seeded Coppin State University, 10-1, on Thursday evening at the NSU Softball Field and advance to the title game(s) of the 2023 MEAC Softball Championship.

The victorious Eagles will be making their second appearance on championship Saturday in the past three years after junior Ivory Jones ended the eight-run rule victory with a two-run homer just two batters into the bottom of the fifth inning. With the three consecutive wins, NCCU will be playing for the title on the winner's side of the bracket for the first time in the double-elimination tournament.

NC Central (18-32) has won its last four games and will await its opponent that will be determined in games that will be played Friday. The championship game will be on ESPN+ and is scheduled to start on Saturday at noon. If the yet to be determined team wins that game, NCCU would play a second title game on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The NCCU Eagles wasted little time to take control of the contest, scoring five runs in the first inning. The early outburst featured RBI-singles off the bats of freshman Takia Nichols, sophomore Jaden Davis and junior Morgan Green

Freshman Nyla Rodgers, freshman Makiya Graves and Jai'lyn Edwards all drove in runs in the third inning to extend the maroon and gray advantage to 8-1.

Jones then capped the semifinal with her league-leading ninth home run of the season. Jones launched the walk-off, two-run blast over the fence in left field.

Once again NCCU received contributions throughout its lineup as every batter reached base while seven Eagles had at least one RBI and seven Eagles scored at least one run.

NC Central finished with an 11-5 hit advantage with Nichols, Davis, Green and junior Jaylah Barr all hitting safely twice. Green scored all three times, including on home run by Jones.

Davis, who was named MEAC All-Tournament as a freshman last season, picked up her second win of this postseason. Davis collected her 10th win after only allowing one run. Davis, who also extended her hit streak to nine games, fanned seven Coppin State batters.
