BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior
Maegan Garrison was only one of two North Carolina Central University softball players to hit safely in both games and she hit her team-high eighth home run of the season as host Coppin State University swept Sunday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader by scores of 3-0 and 10-2.
Freshman
Makiya Graves was the only other NCCU player to hit safely in both contests.
Coppin State (11-24 Overall, 8-10 MEAC) remains the hottest team in the league, extending its conference win streak to seven straight games. NC Central (13-29, 11-5) has dropped out of first place in the league standings.
NCCU will next host MEAC foe Norfolk State University in a rescheduled game on Thursday at noon.
GAME ONE: Coppin State 3, NC Central 0
NCCU was held scoreless for the first time in MEAC play and Coppin State scored a single run in each of the first three innings. Junior pitcher Vanessa Carrizosa hurled the shutout, picking up her second straight win over NCCU and leveling her season record to 10-10.
Garrison, Graves and sophomore
Jaden Davis accounted for NCCU's three hits – all singles.
The visiting Eagles committed four errors, that led to two unearned runs for the host Eagles.
GAME TWO: Coppin State 10, NC Central 2
NC Central led a couple of one-run leads early, but Coppin State used two big frames to pull away for the run-rule triumph in five innings.
Graves doubled to begin the contest and scored on a wild pitch to give the visiting Eagles the early 1-nil edge.
Garrison drilled a one-out solo home in the top of the second to put NCCU back ahead, 2-1. Her home run to left field was her eighth of the season. NCCU was held without a hit from that point by freshman Isabel Tobias, who only allowed three hits for her first collegiate win.
Coppin State scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead and then added five more runs in the fifth. Senior Brissa Alvarado led the charge for CSU with a double in each of those big frames. Alvarado tallied three RBI on those two doubles and she also scored twice.
