NCCU Softball Drops Non-Conference Contest at ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – North Carolina Central University and East Carolina University each registered four hits on Wednesday, but the Eagles walked seven batters and committed two costly errors in a 10-2 non-conference, five-inning loss at ECU.

NCCU freshman shortstop Makiya Graves improved her team-best batting average to .370 by collecting two hits and an RBI in three at-bats versus the Pirates. The Eagles' other two hits were a single by freshman first baseman Takia Nichols and a pinch-hit double by sophomore Jaden Davis, who eventually scored a run.

ECU (26-20) broke open a 2-0 lead by plating six runs in the third inning, half of which were unearned. In all, the Pirates benefited from four unearned runs.

NCCU (13-26) tallied a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, but ECU matched that total in the bottom of the frame to increase its lead to eight runs, ending the ballgame.

The Pirates were sparked by left fielder Taylor Edwards with two hits, including a double, and two runs scored.

ECU starting pitcher Jordan Hatch allowed just one hit with six strikeouts in three innings of work to pick up her 12th win of the season. Ashanti Eubanks surrendered just four hits in four innings, but took the loss for the Eagles.

Up next, NCCU visits Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22, and a single game on Sunday, April 23.
