Eagles Soar to Sixth Straight League Win, 16-2

DOVER, Del. – The North Carolina Central University softball team extended its best undefeated league start to 6-0 since the Eagles joining the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in 2011-12 after picking up a convincing 16-2 road win at Delaware State University late Saturday afternoon.

After inclement weather delayed the start of the game by more than 3 1/2 hours, NCCU scored eight runs in a pair of frames to coast to its most lopsided triumph of the season.

With the 14-run win, NC Central improved to 8-22 on the season and 6-0 in the conference. Delaware State dropped to 6-16 and slipped to 2-4 in the league.

The Eagles broke open a scoreless contest with eight runs in the top of the third inning. The outburst featured five run-producing hits, including RBI doubles by juniors Imara Harrell and Maegan Garrison as well as a two-run single by sophomore Jai'lyn Edwards.

Freshman Makiya Graves, who scored twice in the third inning and then scored to start the fifth inning and later added an RBI-double, led NCCU with five hits, three runs, one RBI and one stolen base.

The Eagles finished with a 16-4 hit advantage, including a pair of base hits by Edwards, Harrell, sophomore Jaden Davis and freshman Nyla Rodgers.

The Hornets avoided the shutout by scoring two runs in the home half of the third inning. Emma Glawson had two hits in the contest, including an RBI-single to plate DSU's first run.

Freshman Takia Nichols, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, drove in NCCU's next two runs with a single to begin another eight-run inning to help the victorious visitors to complete the run-rule win in five innings.

Rodgers hit a grand slam in the final frame for her first collegiate home run. Her bases-clearing long ball cleared the fence in right-center field.

Davis (5-9) improved to 4-0 against conference competition, limiting Delaware State to just one earned run in her complete-game performance that included three strikeouts.

NC Central and Delaware State will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday that is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
