NCCU Forces Extra Innings in Campbell Invite Finale

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team dropped two games on Saturday at the Campbell Invitational, falling to the host Camels by an 8-1 margin before Lehigh University survived the Eagles with a big eighth inning to win 11-4.

Sophomore Jai'lyn Edwards and freshman Makiya Graves highlighted play for the Eagles on the day with three hits apiece. Edwards had one of NCCU's four RBI on Saturday while Graves scored twice. Sophomore Jaden Davis, sophomore Jaidyn Hamby and freshman Takia Nichols followed with two hits apiece.

The Eagles held an early 1-nil edge in the opener against Campbell with Edwards driving in Graves with a single to center in the top of the second.

However, NCCU was held scoreless from that point and the Camels scored in each of the next four innings to pull away to the seven-run triumph.

Campbell (11-7) finished with just a 7-4 hit advantage, but the Camels also drew eight walks. All four of NCCU's hits were singles.

Against the Mountain Hawks, NC Central scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. The late rally featured an RBI-single by Hamby and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ashanti Eubanks.

After falling behind 4-0 as Lehigh got lone runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings, the Eagles started their rally with one run in the home half of the sixth. Graves tripled to begin that frame and scored on an RBI-groundout by Nichols.

Graves provided three hits as NCCU matched the Mountain Hawks with 10 hits apiece. However, the Eagles issued nine more walks, including three bases on balls in the first extra inning.

Lehigh (9-2) took advantage of the free passes and while also tallying five singles in the eighth inning on the way to scoring seven runs and secure its fifth straight triumph.

Edwards had two hits against the Mountain Hawks and Green tallied NCCU's second extra-base hit of the day with a double in the sixth.

NC Central (1-16) will next play two games at North Carolina State University on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
