ROCK HILL, S.C. – Freshman first baseman
Takia Nichols hit her first collegiate home run to account for the lone North Carolina Central University run on Saturday as the Eagles dropped games to Fordham University (8-0) and LIU (6-1) at the Winthrop Garnet & Gold Tournament.
Nichols smashed her solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of NCCU's nightcap on Saturday.
The Eagles were held to just three other hits on the day – two in each game – with the junior trio of
Morgan Green,
Hailey Batista and
Jaylah Barr all recording singles.
The Rams scored their eight runs over four different innings and used four extra-base hits to pull away, including two home runs by junior Bailey Enoch.
Fordham improved to 3-8 on the season with the triumph against NCCU.
Sophomore
Ashanti Eubanks pitched in relief for the Eagles, and she recorded a career-high nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings of work.
The long ball also aided in the Sharks 6-1 win in NCCU's next game. LIU got two-run homers off the bats of senior Camryn Lyman and freshman Mari Narvaiz.
NC Central (0-10) will play one last game at the Winthrop Garnet & Gold Tournament against Harvard University on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
