DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central freshman Kareem Abdul Hakim earned the first singles victory of his college career in the Eagles' loss to Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday afternoon.
Abdul Hakim defeated Edoardo Cecere 6-3, 6-3 to earn the maroon and gray's lone point. He was one of five NCCU freshmen to compete in the match.
Reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week freshman Naresh Bharathy battled for three sets against Win Steveker, who took the first set 6-3. Bharathy bounced back and took the second set 6-2 before Steveker won the final set 6-3.
Also, fighting for three sets was freshman Facundo Olmedo who battled Samuele Pia. Olmedo took control of the match after he won the first set 6-1. However, Pia was able to swing the momentum and eventually defeat Olmedo 6-3 and 10-6 in the final two sets.
Freshman Neiman Sneed fell to Laurenz Blickwede 6-2, 6-2. Senior LaQuon Gilchrist forced a tiebreaker in his first set but was clipped by Lukas Gosselin 7-6 (5), 6-1, while graduate student Sebastian Pino was beaten by Edoardo Bottino 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, the freshman duo of Abdul Hakim/Olmedo was outlasted by Blickwede/Bottino (6-4), and Bharathy/Sneed fell to Gosselin and Arthur Bazil (6-1). In the third doubles match freshman Liam Murtaugh and junior Shaka Cristellotti was beaten by Steveker and Edoardo Cecere (6-2).
Up next, NCCU (0-6) will host UNC Greensboro at the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
