GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team had four players score in double digits, but the Eagles were held to just two made field goals in the fourth quarter as host UNC Greensboro secured a 66-55 victory Thursday night.
Senior guard
Kimeira Burks led NCCU with 17 points while classmate
Tippy Robertson followed with 11 points. The freshman tandem of
Kyla Bryant and
Jada Tiggett both added 10 points. Tiggett topped the maroon and gray with seven rebounds while Burks, Robertson and junior
Morgan Callahan all corralled six boards. Bryant and Robertson each contributed three assists.
The Spartans led for most of the contest, but the Eagles kept things interesting until only shooting 12.5 percent (2-16) from the field in the fourth quarter. UNCG (8-3) outscored NCCU 15-9 in the last quarter to fend off the Eagles and remain undefeated at home at 7-0.
Burks hit a trio of treys in the final two minutes of the first quarter to send NCCU into the second quarter with a narrow 22-21 edge. However, UNCG outscored the Eagles 17-10 over the next 10 minutes to pull ahead 38-32 at halftime.
Burks led all players with 15 of her 17 points at the midway point.
Bryant then netted six points for the Eagles in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer to pull the visitors within five points, 51-46, heading into the final frame. However, NCCU would only make two more shots from the floor from that point to styme its comeback attempt.
Juniors Jayde Gamble and Isys Grady led the victors with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Senior Khalis Cain was a defensive force for UNCG with 12 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
NC Central (3-7) is next scheduled to play a Monday matinee at UNC Asheville with tipoff slated for 2 p.m.
