DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team made nearly half of their shot attempts on the way to an 83-50 home victory over Johnson & Wales University on Sunday afternoon inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
In a sloppy game that had each team committing over 30 turnovers, NCCU made nearly twice as many shot attempts from the floor to level its record to 2-2. The Eagles shot 46.5 percent (33-71) from the field while holding the Wildcats to just 24.6 percent (17-69) on the way to the 33-point victory.
Senior guard
Kimeira Burks poured in a game-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Eagles in scoring for the third time in NCCU's first four games.
Junior forward
Morgan Callahan jumped back into NCCU's starting lineup after missing one game and tallied season-high totals of 15 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and third of her collegiate career.
Junior
Janiah Jones and freshman
Kyla Bryant both scored 12 points as they have each reached double-digit points in three consecutive games.
Junior center
Nijah Cunningham contributed eight points and senior guard
Tippy Robertson chipped in five points. They both had seven rebounds as the Eagles finished with a 50-44 rebounding advantage. Robertson, Burks, Bryant and Jones all had three steals apiece. Robertson handed out eight assists and sophomore
Ray'ven Robinson distributed seven assists as the victors finished with 21 assists on 33 made field goals. Freshman
Jada Tiggett swatted away four JWU shot attempts as she has now had notched four blocks in each of her first two collegiate games.
Both team committed 11 turnovers in a low scoring first quarter and the Eagles had to score the last six points of the period to take a narrow 14-11 edge after 10 minutes of play. NCCU then took over the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 31-8. Burks was the catalyst in the second stanza as she scored 18 of her 25 points in that period, including four trifectas, and the Eagles constructed a 26-point cushion at the midway break.
Freshman Jamyah Blakeney led JWU with 15 points, six steals, five rebounds and two assists.
NC Central (2-2) will try and stay undefeated at home when the Eagles entertain Western Carolina University in a Wednesday afternoon matinee. The Eagles and Catamounts will tipoff inside McDougald-McLendon Arena the day before Thanksgiving at 1 p.m.
