NCCU Drops Road Game at Wofford


SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman Kyla Bryant and junior Janiah Jones scored in double digits for the first time as Eagles to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team in an 82-52 road loss at Wofford College on Tuesday evening.
 
Bryant scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting while Jones swished 10 points and accounted for five of NCCU's seven steals. Bryant and Jones each bucketed a pair of 3-pointers.
 
The Terriers scored 50 points in the middle two quarters – 25 points in each – to break away from the Eagles and win their third consecutive game. Wofford (3-1) is a perfect 3-0 at home.
 
Senior Kimeira Burks scored seven points before fouling out; senior Tippy Robertson tallied six points and four rebounds; and junior Morgan Callahan netted five points and a team-high eight boards.
 
Wofford scored the first basket of the contest and never relinquished the lead. NCCU kept the score close for the first 10 minutes and only trailed 17-12 after the first quarter. However, the Terriers outscored the Eagles by eight points both the second and fourth quarters sandwiched by a nine-point margin in the third to pull away to the 30-point victory.
 
Junior Rachel Rose led the victors with a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Freshman Vitolia Tuilave followed with a double-double, contributing 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Fellow rookie Maddie Heiss made four 3-pointers on the way to scoring 18 points.
 
The Terriers shot 45.2 percent from the field compared to 33.3 percent by the Eagles. Wofford held a 49-34 rebounding edge and doubled-up NCCU 32-16 on points in the paint.
  
NC Central (0-2) will next make its home debut against Mid-Atlantic Christian University inside McDougald-McLendon Arena on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
